Sit Knit Heal

Joyce Yakas

A simple idea based on ancient principles with a new twist...

It has long been acknowledged that "sitting" or meditating can improve your health. The focus on the flow of breath is the key to meditation. Experience and recent studies have shown that the repetitive formation of a stitch, knitting, can offer a similar experience to meditation. The Sit Knit Heal sessions, beginning Monday, January 18, 2010, will provide an opportunity to use knitting as a way to meditate and heal. A basic understanding of meditation and the potential health benefits of knitting will be presented. This introduction will be followed by a period of guided knitting.

Possible health benefits:

  • Manages stress, pain and depression
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Lowers heart rate
  • Can aid in recovery from surgery or illness by keeping the patient relaxed and restful

Research at Harvard University, using the Relaxation Response, originally developed by Dr. Herbert Benson, is an example of the studies that provide us with the possible benefits of knitting. Using the relaxation response, similar to meditation, shows that knitting brings the mind and body to the relaxation response.

Knitting goes hand and hand (or hand and needle) with the Slow Movement — this activity is one that allows us to slow down and focus, clearing the mind in the process.

All levels of knitters are welcome. The emphasis is on the simple "knit" stitch used to create an item that will represent your own experience with meditation and possible healing. Details regarding supplies are posted on the flyer; another option is to purchase a supply kit at the session. If you are currently a non-knitter and would like to participate in these sessions, please contact Joyce Yakas at joyce.yakas@gmail.com to register for a Learn to Knit class.
