Food, Your Wallet, and Your Waistline, Part II

Dr. Jorge Kaufmann, ND, L.Ac.

A health tip to help your pocketbook... and your waistline... and your heart, your stress levels, your immune function, your sleep, and your energy...

Remember the bottom line with food?... We eat so that our cells can do what they are meant to do to keep us healthy, and there are two things that affect this bottom line: how we eat and what we eat. This is Part II of the article focused on what we eat.

You've started incorporating some of the changes in last month's article to get more out of each bite. You're eating a little less because your body feels satisfied and your mind is now working more efficiently. So, you start to wonder... "What is the ideal diet?" In order to get a true answer to this question you will need to switch a minor detail and ask, "What is my ideal diet?"

Is it the: Maker's Diet, Blood Type Diet, Zone Diet, Vegan Diet, Vegetarian Diet, Raw Foods Diet, Gluten-Free / Casein Free Diet, or would you do best to become a Breathatarian and survive on air alone!? Many of the diets out there have good theories and supporting evidence to back them up so how do you choose where to start? The reality is that sometimes just starting begins to create healthy change by eliminating some of the more common offenders and placing more intention in food selection.

In my experience I have found that identifying a person's ideal diet becomes a process of exploration that I guide them on. For many I begin with an Antiinflammatory Diet, here's why: Chronic inflammation has been found to be a common link between most chronic disease whether heart disease, autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, or cancer. The other reason I start with this so often is the way my patients respond to it- great! For an interesting read on inflammation check out this front-page article from Time Magazine, or Dr. Jesse Black's Anti Inflammation Cook Book. More recipes can be found at my other clinic website under Bambu Recipes.

The same way that our nervous system interprets our external environment and reacts in a manner to maintain balance (homeostasis), our cells constantly interpret their environment and react accordingly. If the fluid surrounding our cells is healthy the result is healthy function. If on the other hand, the environment is less than optimal or even toxic the result will be dysfunction, cell mutation, or even greater accumulation of toxicity and chronic disease. The things we eat directly influence the cellular environment. Make it your resolution to begin exploring your ideal diet-Schedule an appointment with a Naturopath to see the benefits on your Food, Waistline, and Wallet, oh, and energy, sleep, immune function...

*** Dr. Duranni will be giving a lecture on Antiinflammatory Lifestyle at RoseSprings Center on December 18th, immediately following my talk on Healthy Ageing. Hope to see you there!
