Recession-Proof Your Mind

I recently had a client who found herself struggling with a layoff and the financial woes of this recession. She said, "I'm waiting for a miracle — the Tooth Fairy or someone to come and rescue me." Sound familiar? How many of us are waiting for a miracle?

The recession has hit, but I am actually beginning to enjoy the slower pace. It gives me time to breathe, think, create and attract. I spent the bulk of last year "chasing my tail" as it were. Like most people, when I'm running in circles, I tend to react instead of attract. Now that my schedule has taken a breath, I am enjoying the chance to regroup and reconnect with other professionals who are also taking the time to embrace the opportunities to build relationships with their clients and each other.

My client's session did cause me to wonder how others are weathering the economic storm. Are you feeling optimistic or pessimistic about the economy, your business or personal finances? What will it take to renew your enthusiasm, generate a more optimistic outlook, and attract what you want? Just what will it take to motivate you?

Wouldn't it be great if we all had an "Easy Button" like Staples advertises, and it actually worked?

There are dozens of theories on motivation, but since human behavior can be quite complex, there really is no single theory that will guarantee results. Each theory is like a different set of eyeglasses for looking at life in a different way. Some work well for one set of circumstances, while others work for a different set of circumstances, but no single theory can work for every circumstance we are faced with, so maybe it's time for a pair of bi-focals to get us motivated in this economy.

What is the definition of motivation anyway? I believe it is defined as why we do (or don't do) what we want to do. Motivation is simply an internal response to an external stimulus. It is unfortunate that many of us get stuck when it comes to self-motivation. So...if you are feeling stuck right now, finding it difficult to get motivated, here are a few tips to Recession-Proof Your Mind:

  1. Re-Focus Your Thoughts. Our thoughts have energy that propels us toward what we spend our time thinking about. When you are feeling powerless to affect change, tell yourself "I am unstoppable." By re-focusing your thoughts on what you want rather than what you don't want, you are able to propel yourself — and your life — in the direction of your desires.
  2. Express Gratitude. Look in the mirror and identify at least three things you are grateful for. (Avoid the tendency to make the endless list of all the things you would like to change - weight, hair, etc.) Then project that gratitude outwards. Next, sit down and write a note, send an email or make a phone call to tell someone thank you, and be specific about what you are most thankful for. Not an email blast to all your friends, but a personalized note of thanks which speaks specifically to how that person has contributed to your life in a positive way. A grateful compliment is a gift to you both - it makes the receiver feel good to be appreciated, it makeyou feel good to show gratitude, and it opens the door to your abundance. The more you appreciate who you are and what blessings you have, the more blessings you become aware of in your life. The more grateful you are for your blessings, the more abundant you feel, and the more abundant you become.
  3. Start a Positive Bedtime Ritual. When you first close your eyes at night, think of three things you are most looking forward to the next day. Small or large, these thoughts will stimulate good dreams and assist you in waking up feeling enthusiastic about your day. Most of us (70% in fact) spend our time running away from our fears instead of towards our desires. This exercise will help you activate a forward progressing mind-set and keep you from worrying all night about factors outside your control.
  4. Activate the Power of 5. The greatest influences in your life relate to the 5 individuals you spend the most time with. Who are they? Are they driven, optimistic and success-oriented, or are they worried, anxious and pessimistic? How do these people talk in your presence? Do they feed you energy, or do they feed you fear? Choose your influencers wisely. Spend time with those who are moving forward — not stuck in reverse.
  5. Discover Effective Time Management Tools. Most of us struggle with time management. Especially when we get busy, we let our environment get messy, and that may be exactly what is sabotaging your motivation. Learn how to prioritize your time effectively so you don't get sucked into the vortex of negative dialogue and doubt. When we get organized and timely, we become less overwhelmed. We become empowered as time affords us the ability to unleash our creativity and achieve even greater accomplishments. When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I clean and declutter. My life just feels easier in a clean environment. When my environment is clean, I can more easily prioritized the tasks I need to take immediate action on that are easiest to do, and delegate my mind to finding easy solutions for the rest. Then I do what I can and trust my mind will formulate solutions for the rest. And it does.

There will always be hard times - that is the natural cycle of economics and human nature. I recently heard a speaker who summed it up best by saying "Economists have successfully predicted 25 of the last 5 recessions."

Take time to re-energize and refocus your mind, and you will be well on your way to achieving your miracle.
