Hypnosis and NLP
What is it, really?
Carol Hildahl, C Ht, M NLP
Hypnosis is a trance and a form of dissociation. We generally do this many times a day and do not even realize it. You've most likely have heard someone say, "I have spaced out, or I was just day dreaming." This is a form of trance type state. Hypnosis has been studied since at least the 18th century. Similar phenomena have been seen throughout recorded history, as far back as the ancient Egyptians. In hypnosis, we work with this natural state to help the individual recognize and find the ability to achieve their goals. When working with those who suffer from chronic pain, we work together to provide new tools for dealing with the pain. When these tools are used in conjunction with the regimens provided by their physician, one's quality of life can be improved. Hypnosis is used to help the brain work more closely with the rest of the body under designated circumstances. A few of the other uses of hypnosis is to help people release weight or stop smoking, although the research is not quite as strong for these uses. It might be best to view hypnosis as an "adjunct" treatment for these problems. Eating less and exercising more are still the most crucial ingredients in any weight loss program, and one's motivation to quit is the best predictor for success when stopping smoking. It is also interesting to note that hypnosis is not restricted to solving bad habits or learning to work with your body to solve crisis issues. It is commonly used to assist in improving other areas of our lives, such as sports performance, memory, and other cognitive abilities, just to name a few. If you can conceive of an area you would like improved, a trained hypnotherapist can help you achieve your goal.
NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It was developed in the early 1970's by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. To understand NLP, we need to recognize that our Brain is perhaps the most amazing and complex computer in the universe. However, nobody gave us an instruction manual on how to work it. NLP goes a long way to showing you how to run your brain, how is it that you do the things you do. Because each person is unique, NLP sets out a way for us to discover how people learn, how people think, how people do things with excellence and how to replicate success. It is the difference between those who excel and those who get by in the way they communicate, motivate, influence, negotiate, lead, and empower. Since we all have the divine rite to change, it only makes sense that we would want to know how to develop the skills and make sense of the world and last but not least make it what you want it to be. You are the true master of your destiny.
Together, these are a valuable set of tools in understanding ourselves and how we operate in our world. Since, we always have positive intent; we often find ourselves doing the same things that we knew worked for us before, and never bothered to change when it stopped working for us. This goes for many aspects of our life and how we deal with ourselves and the world we interact with.
Now Imagine if you will, the endless possibilities that await you now that these tools are within your grasp.
