Feeling Great With Fish Oils

Dr. Nina Meledandri, ND, L.Ac.

Mom was right, and now there are over 8,000 studies to prove it. One teaspoon of fish oil daily may be one of the easiest ways to improve your health and feel great.

Over 8,000 clinical studies on fish oils, and healthcare leaders such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institutes For Health (NIH), the American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association support the use of omega-3 fatty acids, otherwise known as fish oils, in treating many of today's current health concerns. These studies and agencies demonstrate the safety and efficacy of using fish oils to enhance weight loss, improve heart health, brain function, and decrease both acute and chronic inflammation within the joints and tissues of the body.

This is just a brief overview of some of the conditions with substantial evidential support for omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. In regards to improving heart health there is definite evidence that fish oils can reduce triglycerides by 25-30%, reduce risk of stroke, improve survival after a heart attack, and enhance longevity and vitality.

In the arena of weight loss, fish oils support fat loss, decrease body fat mass, and stimulate fat burning in healthy adults.

As a focus factor, evidence demonstrates that fish oils are helpful in improving mood and mental functioning.1

Fish oils have profound anti-inflammatory effects, reducing the number of tender joints and/or morning stiffness in two meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Because of fish oil's potent ability to reduce inflammatory markers throughout the body it is useful in both chronic and acute conditions.

Fish oil supplements are rigorously tested to ensure that they are free of heavy metals and other environmental toxins. Laboratory analysis of fish oil supplements found no detectable levels of mercury or other toxins such as organochlorines in more than 20 products tested.

If you have any questions or concerns about adding fish oil into your regimen please consult with you health care provider.
