CranioSacral Therapy: What can it do for you?

Carole Cotten-Figueiredo, LMT OR Lic# 13383

Would you benefit from a therapy that offers relief from migraines, tension headaches, TMJ disorder, fibromyalgia or chronic neck or back pain? Perhaps you would like assistance in creating better sleep patterns, or you are looking for a way to boost your immune system and support your body's individual, innate healing process by calming, nourishing and supporting your central nervous system.

Imagine a therapy so gentle that it can be used on a newborn, yet so profoundly effective that it can support your health and well-being throughout your entire lifetime. CranioSacral therapists use a touch with pressure often no greater than the weight of a nickel, yet this can elicit softening, release and greater freedom of movement in the connective tissue (fascia) that is found throughout your entire body.

The CranioSacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This system extends from the bones of the skull and face (cranium) down to the sacrum, or tailbone area. Cerebrospinal fluid ebbs and flows within this enclosed system of soft tissue, creating a quiet movement throughout your body, which your therapist can monitor with a gentle touch. Practitioners are able to feel areas of restricted movement, and through gentle manipulation, cause these tensions to melt away.

A CranioSacral session is performed on a person who is dressed in loose, comfortable clothing. You may want to dress in layers, as your body temperature may rise or fall as a result of the therapy. The recipient lies on a warm, padded table. The therapist begins by palpating the cranial rhythm, and then uses delicate manual techniques to facilitate release. Though each individual will experience CranioSacral Therapy differently, recipients often describe feeling deeply relaxed and lighter after the session. Many find headaches and other pain significantly reduced, or report experiencing deeper and better quality sleep.

For more information on CranioSacral and other related therapies including testimonials and class schedules, you can visit the Upledger Institute's website at www.upledger.com. (This is where I was trained in CranioSacral I and II, and SomatoEmotional Release I). I am very excited by the potential healing power of this technique, and have plans to continue taking advanced classes in 2008 and beyond. In February I will attend the class in SER II, and in August I plan to be trained in CranioSacral Therapy for Pediatrics. The indication for treatment of many infant and childhood disorders is very encouraging, and I look forward to sharing more with you as I learn!
