Signing Smart for Hearing Children
RoseSprings Center for the Healing Arts
to Host Infant/Toddler Sign Language Play Class
Class Teaches Parents How to Communicate With Children Before They Can Talk, Speeds Spoken Words
RoseSprings Center for the Healing Arts, dedicated to the needs of new parents, will host a Signing Smart Infant/Toddler Sign Language Play Class led by Fabiola of Hillsboro. The class will consist of 8 weekly sessions held on Mondays beginning January 14, 2008 at 10:30-11:15 (12-24months), and 11:30-12:15 (6-12months) and will teach parents of hearing infants and toddlers how to use American Sign Language (ASL) signs to facilitate communication and learning.
This class has been a blessing for Fabiola. She continues to see the benefits firsthand through Signing Smart with her own child, and nephews, now ages 2, almost 3, and 6 years. Communication between child and adult was improved greatly as a result of Signing Smart.
"Signing Smart methods allow babies to clearly express, 'I'm hungry,' or 'I need milk' or even 'My ear hurts' instead of crying. My child's first word was 'daddy'," said Fabiola. Through discussion, activities, and interactive sign demonstrations, families new to signing and those who have already begun will benefit from the Signing Smart program.
Beginning at 6-7 months, babies have enough motor control to produce signs, whereas the fine motor skills for speaking will develop slowly over the next two years—so even children who have begun to talk can benefit greatly from signing.
"Signing Smart allows babies to communicate clearly from as early as 6 months into the toddler years," Fabiola added.
Signing Smart also has other benefits for both child and parent:
- Signing Smart reduces frustration and even helps to tame the terrible twos
- Signing Smart empowers babies to say exactly what they need and want, or even that they're hurt or sick
- Signing Smart facilitates spoken language development and cognition
- Signing Smart promotes a closer bond between parent and child
The class will be held at RoseSprings Center for the Healing Arts, January 14, 2008, in Hillsboro, and is $100.00 per couple and child, which includes registration, the Signing Smart Beginner Handbook, and The Treasure Chest children's video.
